Paying it Forward Starts at an Early Age

Mac Legerton, Donna Chavis, Delaney E. Scoggins, Alyssa Chavis-Wanson
We have all heard of the old saying "Give Until it Hurts". Two young donors would like to change that to "Give Until it Heals". Alyssa Chavis-Wanson, age 6, and Delaney Elizabeth Scoggins, age 8, have decided that is what they want to do.
Last year Alyssa and Delaney's grandparents, Donna Chavis and Mac Legerton, talked with their parents, Rhiannon Chavis-Wanson, Derek Wanson and Priscilla Woods, about how blessed the girls were with all the gifts they get throughout the year. Instead of giving large gifts to Alyssa and Delaney for their birthdays, Christmas and other celebration occasions, Donna and Mac proposed that they give one large gift at the end of the year. That gift would be a match of any money and a dollar for every hour that the girls set aside from their own resources or volunteered throughout the year. Since the girls often received money as gifts and each got an allowance, they would decide how much would go into a giving fund that their grandparents would match. Their parents helped them identify places they could volunteer and kept track of their time.
Both girls love animals, everything from dragonflies to horses. They both decided independently to make donations to a humane society. Delaney will give to the humane society in her community and Alyssa will donate to the Robeson County Humane Society.
They both feel very good about what they have learned throughout the year and Alyssa plans to spend more time at the Robeson County Humane Society's Shelter in 2011. They also hope that they can be an example to other children who can learn that you can make a difference at any age.
So, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, other loved ones and friends, when you are struggling to decide what to buy the child who has everything, consider Alyssa and Delaney's challenge. Give Until It Heals. There are many places, including the Robeson County Humane Society, that can use the help year round and one is never too young to learn the value of giving time, talent and treasure to the benefit of all.
Will you consider making a donation to the Robeson County Humane Society as part of your giving this year?
